Spring Checklist for Your Shingle Roof

Winter is a demanding season for your roof, with rain, snow, and ice taking their toll. Use this checklist to evaluate your roof’s health this spring and get the roof repaired before your roofing system becomes compromised.

Check Your Gutters

Your gutters tell you about the health of your roof. If gutters are clogged and overflowing, this means water is in sustained contact with your roof — where it has the potential to cause damage. The gutters should be free from debris, so they can drain water away from the roof and home.

Schedule a gutter cleaning if your gutters are clogged with leaves, sticks, or other debris. If the gutters are loose or sagging, tighten the connection so the gutters don’t fall off in a heavy spring rain.

Check for Signs of Leaks

If water penetrates your roof, it travels into the home, often showing up on roofs or in the attic. Check for signs of leaks on ceilings and walls, such as areas of discoloration or peeling paint. Look in the attic for damp wood, wet insulation, or mold or mildew. If you can see the sky through the roof, water is definitely leaking in. Even a small leak can cause significant damage, so if you see signs of leaks, you need to call a roofer ASAP.

Check Your Shingles and Flashing

Using a pair of binoculars, check the shingles and flashing for weather damage. If shingles are broken, missing, or curled, water could get in. Next, check the flashing, which covers the roof edge, roof valleys, and contours of the chimney, skylights, and plumbing stacks. If either the shingles or flashing appears damaged, you could have roof leaks.
