3 Tips for Prepping Your Skylights for Winter

Having snow on the roof of your home typically is not a big issue. However, if you have skylights, you need to take some precautions and perform some winter preparation work. If skylights are not properly maintained, they could experience rotting, missing sealant, and damage flashing. Here are three tips to prep your skylights to minimize issues during the winter months.

Remove Debris

Debris left to collect along skylights may end up scratching the glass and damaging the framing. The debris can also hide problems that should be addressed immediately. Remove dirt, grime, leaves, broken branches, and other types of windblown materials from the skylights. Once the debris is removed from around or on the skylight, you will have a clear perspective of its condition.

Clean the Skylight

Skylights should be cleaned on the inside and outside. Start on the outside on a cooler day as you want to avoid cleaning it during the hottest time of the day. Use a soapy solution and soft sponge to get rid of the grime gently. Then rinse off using clean water. Next, clean the inside of the skylight using a non-abrasive glass cleaner. Make sure to catch all the mechanics of the glass as well as any screens, as you will use a clean rag to wipe off the chain.

To clean the screens, remove them from the inside and take them outside. Spray them down with water and allow them to air dry before putting the screens back into place.

Inspect the Skylights

Some issues can be easily seen, such as missing flashing or damaged cladding. However, there could be other problems that you may not notice immediately from the ground or when up on the roof. Having a professional inspect the skylights ensures that an expert can check out all the mechanical and structural parts of the skylights. They will understand which areas wear out faster than others and can spot common and unusual issues. The professional can then inform you of the problem and the ways in which to repair the skylight.

Skylights can last for many winters when they are prepped and cleaned before the adverse weather strikes. For more information about skylight care, or to obtain skylight installation, contact Brandstetter’s KangaRoof.
