Storm approaching a home

Top Roof Inspection Practices After a Storm

Summer storms can be intense. Read on for tips on what to look for when checking your roof after a storm.

Look for debris that’s fallen on your roof.

Did the storm bring down trees or branches? Look at the roof from ground level to see whether there are any branches or limbs on the roof. If these puncture holes in your shingles, water can penetrate your roofing system.

Carefully inspect any holes or cracks in your roof or skylights.

Check around the edges of the roof and skylights for signs of holes or cracks. If the envelope of the roofing system is penetrated, your roof will no longer be watertight. Any cracks or holes should be fixed right away to prevent water damage to the house.

Check for missing shingles or roof covering materials.

High winds can blow shingles and other roof covering materials off the roof. These should be replaced quickly before the roof sustains further damage from rain, wind, or snow and ice.
If damage is minor, repair is generally a solution. If the damage is extensive or the shingles are near the end of their lifespan, roof replacement might be a better idea.

Check for missing metal edging.

Roofs have metal edging around chimneys, gutters, junctions, and attic vents. If the metal edging is intact, it prevents water from seeping through seams or getting into openings. When the edging becomes compromised, there is an issue. Since this can be difficult to check from ground level, consider having a roofing technician come to inspect the roof.

Examine your ceiling and indoor walls for water leakage.

If you notice discoloration or wet spots on interior walls or ceilings in the days or weeks following a storm, take action. This is evidence of a leak. If it is left untreated, this can cause mold and mildew problems.

Get your roof inspected or repaired by a professional.

Not every roof will need repair after a storm. If you see signs of roof damage or want to make sure your roof is intact, contact a roofing professional. They can check the roof, repair any damaged areas, or do a full roof replacement if the storm was major.
